What’s the Difference Between Alzheimer’s & Dementia?
Alzheimer’s disease is a specific type of dementia that causes memory loss and cognitive decline. On the other hand, dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, but not the only one.
What is Memory Care?
Memory care is a specialized form of long-term care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and other memory impairments.
Our memory care community in Gainesville, VA, provides a safe and structured setting with specialized programs to support cognitive health, stimulate mind and body, and enhance residents’ well-being.
How Do You Know if Memory Care is Right for a Family Member?
Determining if memory care is the right option for a family member involves assessing their cognitive impairment, safety concerns, and ability to perform daily tasks. If a family member has a memory impairment, often gets lost or confused, or needs constant supervision to prevent wandering, memory care at Legacy Ridge could provide the specialized support they need to improve their lifestyle.
How Does Memory Care Differ from Assisted Living?
Memory care provides specialized support for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, focusing on safety, support, and specialized programs tailored to enhance cognitive abilities. Assisted living offers general support with activities of daily living but lacks specialized dementia care protocols.
What Should I Look for in a Memory Care Community?
In general, you should seek a community with a secure setting, trained and compassionate caregivers with expertise in dementia care, personalized care plans, engaging programs, and a focus on helping individuals maintain dignity and an enriched lifestyle.
A couple of personalized factors include amenities that align with your family member’s interests and a location that is close to the family.

How Can I Pay for Memory Care?
We understand that paying for memory care can concern many families, so our Legacy Ridge team is sharing options and programs that help cover the costs of memory care in Gainesville, Virginia. Programs such as the VA’s Aid and Attendance Pension benefit assist veterans and their surviving spouses in paying for senior living. Additionally, various Long-Term Care Insurance policies help many individuals with the costs of senior living communities. Other options include personal savings, retirement accounts, and selling or renting the current home.
How Often Can I Visit My Family Member?
Legacy Ridge is your family member’s home. As such, we warmly invite you to visit anytime, day or night—though you might want to check with your family member first! Regular visits from close relatives and friends show your family member that you care. These visits can help them settle into their new home, especially in the beginning. We also encourage families to build relationships with the Legacy Ridge team and join us for community events.
What Are Respite Stays?
Respite care is a short-term stay within a senior living community. This service is designed for caregivers needing a temporary break while ensuring their relatives receive professional care in a safe and supportive setting. Respite care is also an excellent way for individuals to experience life in a community before committing to moving in full-time. During a respite stay, residents benefit from our full range of amenities and personalized care plans tailored to their specific needs.
